National Parks in Nebraska Near the Big Blue Ranch

Near Beatrice is the Homestead National Monument of America. "Free land!" was the cry for many people reaching for their piece of the American Dream. The Homestead Act of 1862 was one of the most significant and enduring events in the westward expansion of the United States.

By granting free land to claimants, it allowed nearly any man or woman a chance to live the American dream of owning their own land. Visit the park and gain understanding on how the Act changed the lives of all Americans and the land. The Homestead Act transferred more than 270 million acres from Federal to private ownership.

The Homestead Heritage Center just opened in May 2007. Visitor center, museum, hiking trails, films and historic structures. Open year-round. www.nps.gov/home.
